IP and Web Glossaries

DHCP

DHCP is a communication protocol that allows a DHCP server to dynamically assign unique IP address to network devices. DHCP allows network administrators to centrally manage and automate assignment of the IP Addresses.

DNS

DNS often referred as (Domain Name Sysem or Domain Name Service) is used to translate human readable domain names to machine readable IP Addresses.

DNS Leak

DNS Leak refers to a security flaw that exists within VPN which allows DNS requests made from the VPN network to be revealed to ISP DNS servers.

Domain Name

A Domain Name is an unique human-readable Internet Address which is mapped to machine readable IP Address. A domain name such as the iplocation.net is used to allow human to remember a website without having to memorize the numeric IP address.

Ethernet

Ethernet is wiring and signaling standard for physical layer of TCP/IP, a widely used 802.3 LAN technology developed by IEEE. The traditional bandwidth of 10Mbps has been improved to deliver in excess of 1 Gbps.

IP Address

IP Address stands for Internet Protocol Address which is a unique numerical address assigned to computers, tablets, and smart devices to communicate with each other. There are two different versions (IPv4 and IPv6) currently in use.

IPv6 Address

IPv6 Address is a successor of IPv4 which is designed to solve current address exhaustion problem. IPv6 uses 128-bit (as compared to 32-bit for IPv4) addressing scheme which is large enough to overcome 4.3 billion address space offered by IPv4.

MAC Address

MAC Address is a globally unique identifier assigned to network devices which is often referred to as hardware address. MAC Addresses are 48-bit (or 6 bytes) in length. The first 3 bytes are assigned by Internet Standard body, and the next 3 bytes are serial number of the networking device assigned by the manufacturer.

Proxy Server

A Proxy Server is a computer server that sits between a client computer and the Internet, and provides indirect network services to a client. A proxy server is used to hide IP Address of the client machine and work around IP ban or Internet Censorship.

SEO

SEO or Search Engine Optimization is a methodology used to rank well on search engine result pages (SERP). SEO uses meta tags, contents, link building, and keyword density among other things to improve rank on SERP.

Subnet Mask

Subnet Mask is used to mask host portion of the IP address to make a subnetwork of a larger network. A network can be divided into subnetworks, and assigned to smaller organizations or entities.

Tor

Tor is a free software that allows users to communicate with the Internet anonymously. This softwarre directs all Intenet traffic through a free volunteer "mesh" network to hide true IP address of the client computer.

VPN

VPN also known as Virtual Private Network is a network technology which extends private network over a public network. VPN provides encription, security and privacy of transmitted data over public network.

Web Hosting?

Web hosting is referred to as providing storage space for websites, and deliver thoses contents stored on the server when requested by the Internet users. A web hosting providers, also known as the web host, is also responsible for providing databases, email services, and other value-added services for publishing a website. No website can exist without a web host.

World Wide Web?

The World Wide Web, also known as www, web and w3, is one of the core service provided by the Internet. The world wide web is a technology used to deliver web resources identified by URLs and hyperlinks, which was invented by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989. The World Wide Web is comprised of mesh of hyperlinks that connects one website to another, and provides a means to access information available on the Internet at the convenience of point-and-click.
